Rick Matheson our professional trainer will be leaving us in August 2015. We are currently looking for a professional trainer for our magnificent horses. If you would like to apply for this position please contact Ben Sawatzky at email: ben@spruceland.ab.ca.

We wish Rick all the best in his future endeavors.

We have benefited from Rick's skills, dedication and training techniques. In the 27 years that Rick has been in the Peruvian breed, he has trained and shown many champions. Since 1997 he has exclusively trained Peruvian Paso horses from all over Canada and the United States.

Rick firmly believes that the introduction of juniors and novices to the Peruvian Paso is important to the future of the breed in Canada. He offers the use of his horses to Juniors at every show he attends.

Rick takes a modern approach to training, and combines traditional Peruvian methods with round penning and dressage techniques. He begins all horses on the ground in a round pen. When first under saddle, he puts horses in bozal, followed by four-reins, and then he fully finishes them in the bit. The dressage techniques Rick uses are designed to help build muscle and teach horses to properly engage their hind end.

Start your young horse in a quiet environment with Rick's soft hands and training techniques. In the end you will have a horse you can trust and enjoy for many years on the trail or in the show ring.
